Acuity’s Q4 EPS Beat Leaves ABL Margin Risk Unresolved
Acuity’s Q4 EPS Beat Leaves ABL Margin Risk Unresolved
Summary: Acuity reported Q4 FY26 adjusted EPS of $5.77, up 11%, on net sales growth of 2.9%. But the $44.9 million Q4 tariff refund helped reported earnings, Acuity Brands Lighting (ABL) adjusted operating profit fell 7.1%, and Acuity Intelligent Spaces (AIS) now carries QSC acquisition timing in its growth comparisons. At the latest timestamped pre-market reference of $295.64, a historical-range sensitivity has a flat base and 13.1% adverse stress. Reject / no trade.
Published: Oct. 1, 2026, 8:43 p.m. Singapore time (UTC+08:00). The company’s Q4 earnings release was public before the U.S. open; quote time is shown separately.
Opportunity Ranking
The prior ACN screen listed Acuity only as a scheduled-result comparison because its issuer Q4 release was not then accessible. This screen uses the newly published Acuity 8-K exhibit and establishes a different evidence boundary: actual Q4 segment results, tariff adjustments, and FY26 cash flow. It is not a second ACN thesis or a repeated price-only screen.

Selected opportunity: AYI for information value, not as the best executable opportunity.
Why this one now: The Q4 filing splits the headline EPS and cash story by segment and by adjustment. That new operating bridge is more decision-useful than the modest top-line beat.
What should surprise the reader: Q4 GAAP EPS rose 56%, but adjusted EPS rose 11%. Q4 adjusted operating profit grew only 3.4%, and most of the large reported margin improvement disappears after removing the tariff refund. Within ABL, the largest segment, adjusted operating profit fell 7.1% and margin contracted 130 basis points.
Why This Can Move More Than 5% Soon
The fresh result is the catalyst. Q4 reported EPS and full-year free cash flow look strong, while the release also reports $44.9 million of Q4 tariff refunds, an adjusted ABL profit decline, and no numeric FY27 outlook. A first regular-session repricing could respond to which of those facts investors treat as the recurring earnings base. A later guide that restores confidence in ABL or shows durable AIS economics could support a rebound; continued project softness or a smaller refund-normalized profit base could extend the decline.
The latest source-labeled off-session quote is about 4.6% below one regular-close feed and 5.2% below another. Those marks conflict by provider and are not a verified consolidated return. The level is sufficient for reference-only discovery, not for a claim that the market has definitively accepted the result.
The Setup
Fact: Acuity’s Oct. 1 issuer release reports Q4 FY26 net sales of $1.2444 billion, up 2.9%; GAAP diluted EPS of $5.63, up 56%; and adjusted diluted EPS of $5.77, up 11%. The EPS consensus reported by Investing.com was $5.66, so adjusted EPS exceeded that secondary estimate by $0.11. Revenue of $1.2444 billion was below that source’s $1.25 billion estimate by about 0.4%. The consensus comparison is not an issuer measure.
Earnings quality: Q4 received $44.9 million of tariff refunds. Reported gross margin was 53.8%, up 490 basis points, while adjusted gross margin was 50.2%, up 130 basis points after removing refunds. Reported operating profit rose 25.7% to $227.0 million; adjusted operating profit rose only 3.4% to $232.9 million, with adjusted margin up 10 basis points. Q4 also included $17.8 million of special charges, mostly ABL portfolio, supply-chain and operating-footprint actions.
Segment bridge: ABL generated $958.7 million of Q4 sales, 77% of consolidated revenue, down 0.4%. ABL adjusted operating profit fell 7.1% and its adjusted margin declined 130 basis points to 18.8%. Direct-channel sales fell 24.2%, partly offset by independent-channel growth of 3.8%. AIS contributed $297.6 million of sales, up 16.6%, and adjusted operating profit of $74.1 million, up 35.7%, with margin up 350 basis points. AIS is the bright spot, but it is not yet large enough to erase deterioration in the main lighting business.
Acquisition comparability: Acuity bought QSC on Jan. 1, 2025 for $1.2 billion. Its FY25 filing reports $428.6 million of QSC revenue from acquisition date through Aug. 31, 2025, an eight-month contribution. FY26 AIS sales of $1.1066 billion include a full year of QSC. Thus, the 44.8% reported full-year AIS increase is not an organic growth rate. Q4 year-over-year AIS growth is a cleaner three-month comparison, but the issuer does not split Q4 AIS growth between QSC and other products.
Cash bridge: FY26 operating cash flow was $825.6 million and capital expenditure was $77.7 million, implying $747.9 million free cash flow under the issuer’s definition. FY25 FCF was $533.0 million. A simple sensitivity subtracting the $51.3 million of FY26 tariff refunds gives about $696.6 million, still up 30.7% from FY25, but this is not the company’s metric. The cash-flow statement also aggregates $82.4 million in “other operating activities,” versus $9.9 million in FY25, without a release-level breakdown. The results remain preliminary pending the Form 10-K audit.
At Aug. 31, cash was $636.3 million against $697.4 million of current and long-term debt, or about $61.1 million net debt before leases and other claims. Acuity repaid $400 million of term debt, drew $200 million under a credit agreement, repurchased $287.2 million of shares and paid $23.8 million of dividends. These actions support balance-sheet resilience, but do not set a common-share price floor.
The Market Price
| Observation | Value | Timestamp | Source / limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Completed regular-session close | $309.81 | Sep. 30, 4:00 p.m. EDT | Investing.com historical data; ChartExchange shows $310.27 and MarketBeat’s page shows $311.95 for the same session |
| Earlier pre-market feed mark | $309.81 | Oct. 1, 8:06:35 a.m. EDT | Finance-feed timestamp; venue, size and order book not supplied |
| Latest timestamped off-session reference used here | $295.64 | Oct. 1, 8:25 a.m. EDT | MarketBeat/Massive calls this “extended trading”; its own page lists $311.95 as regular close, unlike other feeds |
| 52-week range references | $257.04–$380.17 | Displayed Oct. 1 | Investing.com; observed historical range, not a target or risk bound |
At $295.64, FY26 adjusted EPS of $19.90 implies 14.9× trailing adjusted earnings. At the $309.81 regular close, the same ratio was 15.6×. Neither is a forward multiple: the Q4 release provides no FY27 EPS guide. At a 15× illustrative multiple, a +10% base from $295.64 would require adjusted EPS of about $21.68, 9% above FY26 adjusted EPS. The company has not confirmed that growth path in a published guide.
The Mispricing
The price-versus-reality question is not whether Q4 GAAP EPS grew. It did. It is whether that result supports a sustainable per-share growth rate strong enough to justify a +10% base from the current reference. The adjusted comparisons temper the headline: total adjusted operating profit rose 3.4%, ABL adjusted operating profit declined 7.1%, and the company did not provide numeric FY27 guidance in the release.
The strongest long case is that AIS grew 16.6% in the quarter, its adjusted margin rose 350 basis points, FY26 FCF was $747.9 million, cash exceeded debt by a modest amount, and adjusted EPS grew 10.5% for the year. If ABL stabilizes and AIS converts its growth into recurring operating cash, the present multiple may be supportable.
The strongest alternative is that the headline is supported by tariff refunds and acquired scale while the core lighting segment is losing adjusted profit and direct-channel sales. The latest pre-market reference may already have moved lower, but source conflicts prevent a precise event return. The evidence does not establish either panic pricing or a bargain.
The Positioning
Current short interest, borrow, options open interest, dealer exposure, institutional flows and forced positioning were not verified. The stock had declined 17.1% over three months according to the quote provider, but that is a price outcome, not evidence of who is positioned or forced to act. The 8:25 a.m. source-labeled off-session mark is not an executable quote.
The Catalyst
- FY26 Q4 results — resolved: the Oct. 1 8-K exhibit reports a modest sales increase, a strong GAAP EPS comparison and the adjustments described above.
- Management call — scheduled for 8:00 a.m. EDT: the issuer’s materials list a call today. At this article cutoff, a transcript or replay was not available in the source set; I do not know whether the live discussion adds numeric FY27 guidance.
- Audited FY26 Form 10-K: the earnings release states that the audit report and internal-control evaluation will follow with the annual filing. Reconcile the $82.4 million “other operating activities” line, QSC purchase accounting and segment disclosures.
- Q1 FY27 results: exact report date not verified. Test ABL independent/direct channel sales, adjusted profit and margin; AIS organic versus acquired growth; tariff refunds; receivables; and cash conversion.
- Cheapest falsification: a later issuer report showing ABL adjusted profit stabilizing while AIS growth persists without acquisition-driven comparisons would strengthen the long case. A further ABL decline or cash-flow drop after refund normalization would challenge it.
The Payoff
This 90-day sensitivity runs through Dec. 31, 2026 and uses the $295.64 timestamped off-session reference. The levels are the provider’s observed 52-week high and low plus the current reference, not fair value or forecast targets. Probabilities are subjective, mutually exclusive scenario weights, not observed frequencies. The flat base has the largest weight because adjusted Q4 growth was modest, segment trends split, and no FY27 outlook was available in the release. The top case requires AIS growth to translate into a higher multiple while ABL stabilizes. The bottom case reflects a retest of the observed 52-week low if ABL deterioration and the refund-adjusted earnings gap persist.
| Scenario | Probability | Target / Level | Return from $295.64 | Horizon | Conditions | Evidence Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top Case | 15% | $380.17 | +28.6% | Through Dec. 31, 2026 | Retest the observed 52-week high as AIS grows and ABL stabilizes | Low as forecast; historical level |
| Base Case | 60% | $295.64 | 0.0% | Through Dec. 31, 2026 | Hold near the current reference while the market waits for a published FY27 outlook | Low; reference hold, not a forecast |
| Bottom Case | 25% | $257.04 | -13.1% | Through Dec. 31, 2026 | Retest the observed 52-week low if ABL adjusted profit and channel sales continue to weaken | Low as forecast; historical level |
| Invalidation | n/a | Operating evidence, not a stop | Not applicable | FY27 guide or next filing | Published guide supports durable growth; tariff refunds and QSC acquisition effects are reconciled; ABL margins stabilize | Medium; observable but unresolved |
Probability-weighted expected value: $298.67, or +1.0% gross versus the $295.64 reference before spread, slippage, fees or other costs. Using the other verified Sep. 30 close reference of $309.81 with the same levels and weights yields about -3.6%; the cross-feed discrepancy changes the sign, so this is a sensitivity, not a forecast. Current market level and timestamp: $295.64, Oct. 1, 8:25 a.m. EDT; source-labeled off-session reference. Last completed regular close: $309.81–$311.95 across cited providers. Primary instrument: AYI common stock, research only. 10/5 favorable base move: 0.0%; the +28.6% top level is not the highest-probability base. 10/5 credible adverse move: 13.1% to the observed 52-week low; the historical level is not a maximum-loss estimate. 10/5 measurement basis: Reference-only; entry price is null. 10/5 status: Reject. The base is flat, the adverse stress exceeds 5%, and base/adverse reward-risk is 0:1. Gross expected value is not established after costs, and a more recent regular-close reference produces negative weighted value. Confidence: Low.
Sensitivity: The same 52-week low is 17.0% below the $309.81 regular close, versus 13.1% below the $295.64 off-session mark. To hold the adverse case within 5% at the lower mark, bottom would need to be at least $281.86, above the historical low. No valuation, contract or capital-structure protection supports that ceiling.
The Kill Shot
Strongest long case: AIS adjusted operating profit grew 35.7% in Q4 and its margin rose 350 basis points; FY26 FCF and adjusted EPS increased, while net debt at year-end was modest. ABL can benefit from pricing, productivity and project timing if recent weakness proves temporary.
Strongest counterparty argument: the Q4 $44.9 million tariff refund helped GAAP gross margin, while the adjusted ABL segment posted lower profit and a 130-basis-point margin decline. The $1.1 billion FY26 AIS segment embeds a $1.2 billion QSC acquisition, with FY26 including twelve months and FY25 including eight. FY27 guidance and a verified post-call earnings bridge are absent at cutoff.
Most fragile long assumption: AIS growth and the tariff-normalized cash balance will compensate for a durable slowdown in the much larger lighting business without requiring a lower earnings multiple.
Why a directionally right thesis can still lose: AIS may keep growing while ABL declines, tariff refunds do not recur, working-capital and other operating cash lines reverse, or the market values the company on a weaker stand-alone lighting trajectory. The first off-session price mark is not reliable evidence of executable liquidity or price acceptance.
What Would Prove This Wrong
- The call or next filing provides a quantified FY27 guide with sustained consolidated adjusted profit growth and no reliance on another tariff refund.
- Q1 FY27 ABL revenue, adjusted operating profit and margin stabilize, while AIS reports enough organic growth disclosure to separate QSC comparison effects.
- Audited cash flows reconcile “other operating activities,” the tariff refund, FCF and repurchases.
- A fresh regular-session price and liquidity record supports an independently derived +10% base with a credible adverse case no worse than -5%.
These items would justify a new model; the current no-trade screen does not automatically promote to a Watchlist.
Risk Audit
- Revenue mix: ABL is about 77% of Q4 sales and declined 0.4%; AIS grew 16.6% but represented about 24% of sales.
- Acquisitions: QSC cost $1.2 billion and was acquired Jan. 1, 2025. FY25 AIS includes eight months of QSC, while FY26 includes twelve. Full-year AIS growth is not organic growth.
- Tariff refund: $51.3 million of FY26 tariff refunds was deducted in adjusted measures; $44.9 million was received in Q4. It is not a recurring source of profit or cash.
- Cash flow: reported FCF is strong, but the “other operating activities” row increased from $9.9 million to $82.4 million and is not disaggregated in the Q4 release. Normalizing the tariff refund alone leaves a positive FCF increase, but not a company metric.
- Audit status: Acuity says the annual audit report and internal-control evaluation will come with the Form 10-K; the release is preliminary.
- Market risk: prior close providers disagree; pre-market quotes do not provide a verified spread, depth, venue quality or exit capacity. The 52-week low is a stress reference, not a floor.
- Positioning and macro: current short, option, dealer and fund-flow data are unknown; project starts, rates, tariffs and commercial construction can change lighting demand.
Best Trade Strategy
No trade. Do not initiate a long using the $295.64 off-session mark or a historical 52-week level. Entry remains null and execution is blocked. Reassess after the regular session and the earnings call, then require a new model whose highest-probability base is at least +10%, adverse risk is within -5%, reward/adverse ratio is at least 2:1, weighted value is positive after costs, and liquidity is verified. Common shares are the simplest future research expression; options cannot be assessed without a live chain and maximum-loss analysis. No options, leverage, margin, market orders or price-floor language.

Bottom Line
Acuity’s headline Q4 EPS growth is not a clean long signal. Adjusted EPS rose 11%, but the company received $44.9 million in Q4 tariff refunds, ABL adjusted operating profit fell 7.1%, and the faster AIS segment’s full-year growth includes a QSC acquisition-period comparison. At $295.64, the highest-probability base is flat and the historical downside stress is 13.1%. Reject; no long signal.
