Micron’s Customer Deposits Improve Visibility, Not 10/5 Asymmetry
Micron’s Customer Deposits Improve Visibility, Not 10/5 Asymmetry
Summary: Micron’s FY26 Q4 revenue of $54.23 billion exceeded its prior guide, non-GAAP gross margin reached 87.0%, and Q1 FY27 guidance rises to $61.5 billion of revenue. The fresh cash/claim bridge is less simple: $12.747 billion of FY26 customer-contract-liability deposit proceeds arrived in financing cash flow, while the Sep. 3 balance sheet shows $12.895 billion of noncurrent customer contract liabilities. Those facts strengthen demand visibility, but deposits remain delivery obligations, not recognized operating revenue. At the $1,054.46 6:00 p.m. EDT after-hours reference, the 90-day map has a flat base and a 12.1% observed-level downside stress. Reject / no trade.

Opportunity Ranking
This U.S.-only long screen compares fresh issuer results across distinct business models. MU is a material post-report update to the Sep. 28 pre-event screen: that article rejected a short into the pending print; this one tests the new Q4 actuals and customer-deposit bridge as a possible long. The old and new boundaries are stated separately.
| Rank | Candidate | Direction | Mispricing | Evidence Freshness | Catalyst Window | Positioning | 10/5 Status | Tradeability | Main Rejection Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Micron (MU) | Long | Q4 actuals exceeded the June guide and customer-funded agreements add visibility, but record margins may be near a cyclical peak and the share remains exposed to a drawdown well beyond 5% | Sep. 30 issuer release; prior primary SCA terms | First regular-session acceptance Oct. 1; next Q1 report, exact date unverified | Sep. 25 options-implied move was secondary pre-event context; current positioning and order book not verified | Reject: 0% base, -12.1% observed-level stress, 0:1 base/adverse | Nasdaq common; late extended marks differ by provider/time | Deposits fund commitments but also leave product-delivery obligations; capacity expansion and memory pricing remain cyclical |
| 2 | Jabil (JBL) | Long | FY27 revenue guidance is $44.5B, up 24%, and core EPS $17.55, up 34%, but a late feed snapshot showed a roughly 10% decline after strong results | Sep. 30 preliminary FY26 issuer report | FY27 execution and Q1 cash conversion | Direct positioning not reviewed | Reject: no supported 10% base with a 5% adverse bound | NYSE common; post-close vendor mark is not an executable quote | Working capital expanded sharply; core operating margin is guided at 6.1% |
| 3 | FactSet (FDS) | Long | FY26 organic ASV grew 7% and retention exceeded 95%, while FY27 ASV guidance slows to 5%-6.5% | Sep. 30 issuer FY26 release | FY27 quarter and Nov. 10 investor day | Current positioning not reviewed | Reject: no 10/5 map | NYSE common; no execution audit | AI adoption may not convert into paid recurring growth or margins |
| 4 | Conagra (CAG) | Long | Q1 adjusted EPS was $0.41 and FY27 guide held, but organic sales declined 1.1%, volume fell 2.1%, and Q1 free cash flow was negative | Sep. 30 issuer Q1 release | Next quarterly result; date not verified | Current positioning not reviewed | Reject: no 10% base or 5% adverse bound | NYSE common; no execution audit | One profit beat does not prove a volume, margin or leverage inflection |
| 5 | SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) | Long | Broad-market baseline; no issuer-specific catalyst supports a 10/5 long | Sep. 30 market-feed reference | Rates, oil and macro remain two-sided | Index positioning not reviewed | Reject: no issuer-specific 10/5 case | Deep regular-session liquidity historically; no live audit | Macro can dominate a single-name view |
Selected opportunity: MU for information value, not as the best executable opportunity.
Why this one now: The actual report replaces the June forecast with Q4 margins, EPS and cash flows. Q4 did not roll over; revenue exceeded the prior guide’s upper bound and Q1 guidance rises again. A different question now carries the thesis: whether contracted, customer-funded demand can keep margins and cash returns durable through capacity expansion and a memory downcycle.
What should surprise the reader: The largest fresh clue is not another AI headline. Micron said in June that Q3 customer deposits and related commitments would appear more prominently in Q4. FY26 disclosures now show $12.747 billion of customer-contract-liability deposit proceeds in financing activities and $12.895 billion of noncurrent customer contract liabilities on the Sep. 3 balance sheet. That is evidence of customer commitment and liquidity, but not revenue, operating cash flow or free equity value. The issuer does not reconcile each figure to individual agreements.
The Setup
Fact: Micron’s Q4 FY26 revenue was $54.229 billion, versus $41.456 billion in Q3 and $11.315 billion in Q4 FY25. Q4 non-GAAP gross margin was 87.0%, versus 84.9% in Q3 and 45.7% a year earlier; non-GAAP diluted EPS was $33.42. Full-year revenue was $133.188 billion and non-GAAP EPS was $75.52. These are company-reported outcomes, not a normalized earnings base.
The June guide had called for $50 billion ± $1 billion Q4 revenue, approximately 86% non-GAAP gross margin and $31 ± $1 non-GAAP EPS. Q4 revenue exceeded the guide’s upper bound by 6.3%; gross margin was 100 basis points above the guide midpoint, and EPS was above its upper bound. Q1 FY27 guidance is $61.5 billion ± $1.5 billion revenue, approximately 86.25% non-GAAP gross margin and $38.15 ± $1.00 non-GAAP EPS. Q1 revenue midpoint is 13.4% above Q4 actual; guided gross margin is 75 basis points below Q4. Micron did not provide full-year FY27 revenue or EPS guidance.
Fact: Micron’s Q3 prepared remarks described 16 signed Strategic Customer Agreements (SCAs): typically five-year terms through 2030 (automotive agreements generally three years), take-or-pay minimum volumes, and coverage of roughly 20% of DRAM and one-third of NAND volume over those terms. Micron said 14 agreements’ remaining performance obligations were approximately $100 billion at minimum prices and volumes, while explicitly warning that RPO is not total future revenue. Management also projected $22 billion in customer deposits and related financial commitments, mostly cash deposits.
New Q4 evidence: FY26 cash flows list $12.747 billion of customer-contract-liability deposit proceeds in financing activities; the Sep. 3 balance sheet lists $12.895 billion of noncurrent customer contract liabilities, versus $568 million at May 28. Inference, not a disclosed item-by-item reconciliation: these values are consistent with management’s June statement that SCA deposits would appear more prominently in Q4. The release does not tie each balance to named SCAs. Deposits strengthen funding visibility but remain obligations to provide product or otherwise settle under contract terms.
FY26 operating cash flow was $89.675 billion; adjusted free cash flow was $62.308 billion after $27.367 billion of net capital expenditures. Net capex subtracts $3.316 billion of government-incentive proceeds from $30.712 billion gross PP&E spending. Micron ended the year with $73.48 billion in cash, marketable investments and restricted cash, against $5.179 billion of current and long-term debt. These figures show financial capacity, but not immunity from working-capital demands, fab spending or future delivery obligations.
The Market Price
| Observation | Value | Timestamp | Source / limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Completed regular-session close before the release | $1,066.85 | Sep. 30, 3:59:59 p.m. EDT | ChartExchange; its Sep. 29 close was $1,065.08 |
| Extended-hours observation | $1,075.68 | Sep. 30, 4:59:37 p.m. EDT | ChartExchange; not a consolidated NBBO or executable entry |
| Later vendor snapshot | $1,065.11 | Sep. 30, 5:25:52 p.m. EDT | Finance-feed last trade; session/venue not identified by the feed |
| Latest time-stamped after-hours reference by cutoff | $1,054.46 | Sep. 30, 6:00 p.m. EDT | Public.com; its own page shows inconsistent regular-close values |
These time- and provider-specific late marks do not reconcile. ChartExchange showed $1,075.68 at 4:59 p.m.; a finance-feed snapshot was $1,065.11 at 5:25 p.m.; Public.com showed $1,054.46 at 6:00 p.m. These may reflect actual movement and provider/tape differences. Public.com’s page itself also displays conflicting close values, and the finance feed does not identify session or venue. No exact event return is inferred. The scenario map uses the latest timestamped after-hours mark available by this run’s cutoff, $1,054.46; it is reference context only.
At the $1,054.46 reference, price divided by FY26 non-GAAP EPS of $75.52 is about 14.0x. This is a backward-looking ratio on a year with 81.1% annual non-GAAP gross margin, up from 40.9% in FY25. A low-looking P/E on peak-cycle earnings does not establish undervaluation.
The Mispricing
Observation: Q4 and Q1 guidance exceeded the previous Q4 trajectory, while customer-deposit proceeds and contract liabilities became much more visible. Inference: contracted minimum volumes and prepayments may damp some future spot-market sensitivity. Counter-inference: SCAs cover specified minimum volumes over several years, their customer-specific economics are not public, and capacity additions may eventually restore supply faster than demand. These agreements weaken a simple “all earnings are spot” thesis; they do not make the whole business non-cyclical.
After-hours vendors disagree on both the regular-close reference and subsequent marks. The verified sequence in the source set includes a $1,075.68 extended mark at 4:59 p.m. and a $1,065.11 late vendor snapshot at 5:25 p.m. This is not enough to say the market dismissed the report. It is enough to withhold an execution conclusion and insist on regular-session acceptance before updating any trade state.
The previous Sep. 28 screen asked whether the Q4 guide and SCA story could support an event-driven short. Its answer was Reject because the adverse squeeze stress was too large. The new issuer report removes the pending-quarter uncertainty and strengthens the demand evidence. It does not by itself create a different asymmetry: no through-cycle earnings estimate or verified 5% downside bound has emerged.
The Positioning
An ex-ante secondary options page reported an approximately ±8.5% implied move for the Sep. 30 release as of Sep. 25. This is stale event context, not a current chain or post-event positioning measure. Current short interest, borrow, post-print options open interest, dealer exposure, institutional flows, holder concentration and forced positioning were not verified. Extended-hours prices do not identify who traded or why.
The Catalyst
- Q4 actuals: resolved. Q4 revenue exceeded the June guide’s upper bound; Q1 guide also rose. This materially changes the evidence boundary of the Sep. 28 pre-event screen.
- First regular-session acceptance: Oct. 1. Compare the official close with the Sep. 30 regular close and separately timestamped extended-hours references. Attribute movement only after checking semiconductor peers and the index.
- Q1 FY27 delivery and contract-liability test: Micron guided to $61.5 billion ± $1.5 billion revenue and approximately 86.25% non-GAAP gross margin. The exact report date is not verified. Reconcile deposits, contract-liability runoff, shipments, recognized revenue, operating cash, PP&E spending and incentives.
- Cheapest disconfirmation: Q1 performance that meets guidance while deposits convert into delivered product and cash without a margin, price or capex miss strengthens the long-duration view. A guide cut, abrupt liability reversal, slowing shipments or lower realized prices challenges it. Neither direction alone proves the 10/5 bounds.
The Payoff
This 90-day map through Dec. 30 is a reference-level sensitivity, not fair value or a forecast. The top level is the observed Jun. 25 post-Q3 intraday high; the bottom is the Sep. 16 regular close. The base holds at the latest after-hours reference. Probabilities are subjective scenario weights, not frequencies. The highest weight stays on flat because strong guidance and funded demand support value while post-print marks, undisclosed contract economics and the capex cycle leave durability unresolved.
| Scenario | Probability | Target / Level | Return from $1,054.46 after-hours reference | Horizon | Conditions | Evidence Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top Case | 15% | $1,255.00 | +19.0% | Through Dec. 30, 2026 | Retest the observed Jun. 25 post-Q3 high as Q1 guide delivery and contracted shipments sustain the cycle | Low as forecast; historical intraday level |
| Base Case | 55% | $1,054.46 | 0.0% | Through Dec. 30, 2026 | Q1 broadly tracks guidance while investors wait to assess supply, contract liabilities and margins | Low; reference hold, not a forecast |
| Bottom Case | 30% | $926.55 | -12.1% | Through Dec. 30, 2026 | Retest the Sep. 16 close if memory pricing, mix or demand deteriorates despite the guide | Low as forecast; historical close |
| Invalidation | n/a | Evidence trigger, not price stop | Not applicable | Q1 result and next filing | Guide cut or material deterioration in realized price, customer-contract liabilities, shipment conversion, cash flow or capex | Medium; observable but unresolved |
Probability-weighted expected value: $1,046.17, or about -0.8% gross versus the $1,054.46 after-hours reference before costs. The calculation is the probability-weighted sum of the three levels divided by $1,054.46, less one. Current market level and timestamp: $1,054.46, Sep. 30, 6:00 p.m. EDT; after-hours reference only. The completed regular-session close was $1,066.85. Primary instrument: MU common stock, research only. 10/5 favorable base move: 0.0%; the +19.0% top case is not the highest-probability base. 10/5 credible adverse move: 12.1% to the observed Sep. 16 close; this is a historical stress, not a maximum-loss estimate or cap. 10/5 measurement basis: Reference-only; entry price is null. 10/5 status: Reject. Base reward/adverse ratio is 0:1, adverse stress exceeds 5%, and weighted reference value is negative before costs. Confidence: Low.
The Kill Shot
Strongest long case: Q4 revenue grew 30.8% sequentially, Q1 revenue guidance implies another 13.4% step-up at midpoint, and the SCAs provide multi-year minimum commitments and deposits. FY26 operating cash flow and adjusted free cash flow were large even after substantial capex. This is more than an unsupported AI slogan.
Strongest counterparty argument: results arrive at record margins in a capital-intensive memory business. Q4 non-GAAP gross margin was 87% and Q1 guide is 86.25%. In June, management expected FY27 quarterly capex above Q4 levels; the Sep. 30 release did not replace that plan with a quantified FY27 annual capex number. Minimum-price RPO is not total revenue, customer terms are undisclosed, and deposits fund operations while leaving delivery obligations.
Most fragile long assumption: SCA terms and deposits will preserve enough realized gross profit through a memory-price downturn to offset capacity investment. Customer-specific volumes, prices, schedules, cancellation remedies and margin contribution are not public.
Why a directionally right thesis can still lose: earnings can rise while MU falls if memory pricing turns, supply catches up, working capital absorbs cash, or the market assigns a lower multiple to peak-cycle results. The Jun. 25 high is not fair value or a floor.
What Would Prove This Wrong
- Q1 FY27 meets or exceeds the $61.5B ± $1.5B revenue guide and approximately 86.25% non-GAAP gross margin.
- Later filings reconcile customer deposits with SCA terms, deliveries, recognized revenue and contract-liability runoff.
- Operating cash and adjusted FCF hold up after separating receivables, inventory, customer-deposit financing, incentives and gross capex.
- The first regular session accepts the post-result price relative to semiconductor peers and the index.
These observations would justify rebuilding the 10/5 model; they do not retroactively turn the present reference map into a trade.
Risk Audit
- Cycle: pricing and mix are improving from depressed FY25 levels; current margins may not persist.
- Contracts: aggregate minimum-volume RPO and deposits are issuer-disclosed, but customer-level terms are not. The company says RPO is not total revenue to be recognized.
- Cash/claims: deposits are financing inflows tied to future delivery; do not count them both as revenue and unrestricted common equity.
- Capital intensity: FY26 gross PP&E spend was $30.712B and net capex $27.367B after incentives. The expectation for FY27 quarterly capex above Q4 was stated in June and is not a fresh quantified FY27 annual guide.
- Working capital: receivables were $36.197B at Sep. 3 versus $31.025B in May; inventory rose to $10.372B from $8.567B. These balances do not prove impaired collection, but make conversion a key test.
- Execution: the regular close preceded the after-close release. Extended-hours marks conflict by time/provider; regular-session spread, depth, venue/volume quality and exit capacity are unverified.
- Positioning and tail risks: current short, options, dealer and fund positioning is unknown; export controls, customer concentration, geopolitics, technology and supply response remain material.
Best Trade Strategy
No trade. Do not initiate a long from a post-close result or extended-hours mark. Entry remains null and execution is blocked. Reassess after regular-session acceptance and a new map with a highest-probability base above +10%, credible adverse move within -5%, at least 2:1 reward/adverse risk, and verified liquidity. Common stock only for future research; no options, leverage, margin, market orders or price-floor language.

Research Quality Scorecard
| Criterion | Score | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Market disagreement | 4 | Q4/Q1 fundamentals and SCAs support duration, while peak margins and supply response preserve cycle risk |
| Evidence base | 5 | Fresh issuer results, balance-sheet/cash-flow data and primary SCA remarks; customer-level terms remain undisclosed |
| Positioning and flows | 2 | Late marks and stale ex-ante event context exist; current positioning, borrow, depth and venue quality do not |
| Catalyst path | 4 | First-session acceptance and Q1 guide delivery are observable; exact next report date is unverified |
| Payoff architecture | 1 | Flat base, -12.1% observed downside stress, 0:1 base/adverse ratio, and -0.8% weighted reference return |
| Invalidation discipline | 4 | Guidance, shipment, pricing, contract-liability, cash and capex tests are measurable |
| Differentiated insight | 5 | Reconciles customer deposits with financing cash and delivery obligations rather than treating them as revenue or a floor |
| Client value | 5 | Updates the prior pre-result view with actuals while refusing to equate record earnings with 10/5 asymmetry |
| Total | 30/40 | Reject / no-trade screen; failed 10/5 economics override the score |
Bottom Line
The Q4 report and Q1 guide make the earlier cycle-short concern less immediate: actual results exceeded guidance, and demand remains strong. SCAs and customer deposits add visibility and funding, but they do not remove delivery obligations or cap downside across the whole business. From the late after-hours reference, the base is flat, the observed downside stress is 12.1%, and weighted reference value is negative before costs. Reject; no long signal.

A late-evening semiconductor research desk with a memory wafer and server DIMM beside two ledgers: one marked “reported sales / 87% gross margin,” the other “customer deposits / product still owed.” A five-year contract band overlays a visibly cyclical memory-price curve while a fab blueprint stretches into the distance. Graphite, muted copper and warm paper; restrained and analytical, no logos, price arrows or implied floor. Add a subtle readable “The Mispricing Desk” watermark at the lower right.
