FactSet’s AI Momentum Is Real; Its Guidance Still Does Not Clear 10/5

Summary: FactSet’s fiscal 2026 organic ASV grew 7%, annual retention stayed above 95%, and AI-solution ASV additions more than doubled. Yet FY27 organic ASV guidance slows to 5%-6.5%, reported revenue is guided to 5%-6% growth, and current profitability remains below the prior-year level. At the $268.53 1:30 p.m. EDT reference, an illustrative 90-day map has a flat base and a 7.7% observed-level downside stress. Reject / no trade.

Opportunity Ranking

This U.S.-only long screen compares three fresh, issuer-reported results across distinct business models. SPY is the broad-market reference. Fresh earnings are catalysts, not evidence by themselves that the stock is mispriced.

Rank Candidate Direction Mispricing Evidence Freshness Catalyst Window Positioning 10/5 Status Tradeability Main Rejection Risk
1 FactSet (FDS) Long Organic ASV and AI adoption are solid, but next-year growth guidance is slower than FY26 and the current stock price still requires a recovery in observed market value to create more than 10% upside Sep. 30 FY26 issuer release; price references from Sep. 29 close and Sep. 30 regular session FY27 quarterly updates; Nov. 10 investor day Direct short interest, options positioning, ownership flows, and current order-book evidence not verified Reject: reference base 0%; bottom stress -7.7%; base/adverse 0:1 NYSE common; intraday references only; spread, depth, venue and exit quality not verified AI demand may compound recurring ASV faster than guidance implies, while current margins and a lower multiple can persist
2 Jabil (JBL) Long FY27 revenue guide is up 24% and core EPS up 34%, but the stock was down about 7.9% at a 1:21 p.m. EDT reference despite strong preliminary results; high expectations and customer concentration complicate the price signal Sep. 30 preliminary FY26 issuer release; regular-session quote reference FY27 execution, Q1 results and cash conversion No current positioning or order-book review Reject: no independently underwritten 10% base with a credible 5% downside bound NYSE common; apparently active turnover, but no execution audit Preliminary results and outsized receivables, contract assets and inventory leave conversion and customer timing open
3 Conagra (CAG) Long Q1 adjusted EPS beat secondary estimates and FY27 guide was reaffirmed, but organic volume fell 2.1%, adjusted gross margin narrowed, free cash flow was negative and net leverage remained about 4x Sep. 30 issuer Q1 release; regular-session quote reference Next quarterly update; exact date not verified Positioning and current order-book data not reviewed Reject: no supportable 10% base or 5% downside bound NYSE common; no execution audit A profit beat does not establish a volume, margin or leverage inflection
4 SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) Long Broad-market context only; no issuer-specific catalyst supplies a 10/5 edge Sep. 30 regular-session quote feed Rates, oil and macro data remain two-sided Index positioning not assessed Reject: no evidence-based 10% base or 5% downside bound Deep regular-session liquidity historically, but no order-book snapshot Index prices can continue to reflect macro shocks not captured by this issuer screen

Selected opportunity: FDS for information value, not as the best executable opportunity.

Why this one now: The Q4 release directly tests whether rising AI-product adoption is translating into durable subscription growth and pricing power. It is a fresh company-specific update, unlike a generic AI theme. The price response is positive at the reference time, but the release does not yet demonstrate a 10% base revaluation with a defensible downside bound.

What should surprise the reader: The bullish fact is not only that AI-solution ASV additions more than doubled, but that retention remained above 95% and average renewal contract length grew roughly 30% in Q4. The limit is that FactSet guides to slower organic ASV growth next year, and those adoption facts do not prove that AI will accelerate net revenue or margins.

The Setup

Fact: FactSet reported Q4 GAAP revenue of $634.7 million, up 6.3% year over year; organic revenue rose 7.1%. FY26 organic ASV was $2.568 billion, up 7.0%. Annual ASV retention remained above 95%, and average renewal contract length increased about 30% during Q4. AI-solutions ASV added during FY26 more than doubled year over year. These are issuer-reported results, not independent measures of AI product profitability.

The less favorable bridge is also in the release. Q4 adjusted operating margin was 33.0%, down from 33.8%; FY26 adjusted operating margin was 34.5%, down from 36.3%. FY27 guidance is 5.0%-6.5% organic ASV growth, $2.60-$2.625 billion revenue, 34.75%-35.25% adjusted operating margin, and $19.25-$19.65 adjusted diluted EPS. That is continued growth, with modest planned margin recovery from FY26, not proof that the prior-year margin structure has returned.

The strongest long case is that data embedded in investment and wealth workflows has switching costs, high renewal rates, and an expanding AI attach opportunity. The strongest skeptical case is that AI usage and product adoption can grow without a commensurate rise in paid seats, revenue per client, or gross profit; meanwhile, data licensing, product investment and competition can absorb monetization. Both views remain plausible after this release.

The Market Price

Observation Value Timestamp Source / limitation
Latest completed regular-session close before results $259.97 Sep. 29, 4:00 p.m. EDT Yahoo Finance historical price; not an executable entry
Regular-session reference after results $268.53 Sep. 30, 1:30 p.m. EDT MarketBeat/Massive fair-market-value reference; not NBBO or executable
Earlier independent market feed $266.58 Sep. 30, 1:16 p.m. EDT Finance feed; providers and timestamps differ
Sep. 30 reference-day range at earlier snapshot $248.00-$271.10 Through Sep. 30, 1:16 p.m. EDT Finance feed, not a future support/resistance band
Observed prior close used only as upside anchor $313.55 Aug. 31, 4:00 p.m. EDT Historical close; not fair value

MarketBeat’s later $268.53 observation was about 3.3% above the previous close; the earlier finance feed at $266.58 was about 2.5% higher. The difference is consistent with movement over time and different feed marks, not a tradeable spread comparison. Neither source supplies a verified bid/ask, depth, venue quality or likely exit capacity.

At $268.53, the quote is about 13.8 times the midpoint of FactSet’s FY27 adjusted EPS guide ($19.45), or about 15.3 times the midpoint of the GAAP EPS guide ($17.25). These are simple price-to-guidance ratios, not a full valuation: the adjusted number excludes specified items, and no current consensus distribution or comparable-company valuation bridge was independently reconciled.

The Mispricing

Observation: FY26 organic ASV growth accelerated to 7.0%, while management’s FY27 guide is 5.0%-6.5%. Q4 AI-solution ASV additions more than doubled year over year, but reported revenue still grew 6.3% and Q4 adjusted margin contracted 80 basis points. Inference: the market may be assigning value to AI adoption before the conversion into durable paid growth is visible. Counter-inference: the guide may simply be conservative, while high retention and longer renewals reduce churn risk and support future cross-selling.

The price already discounts some caution. At $268.53, the stock is below its $313.55 Aug. 31 close and its FY27 adjusted-EPS guide implies a low-teens price multiple. That is not enough to call it cheap: the market can rationally maintain a discount if organic growth slows, margins fail to recover, or AI displaces pricing in legacy data products. I do not have sufficient reliable data to quantify a fair value accurately.

Analyst estimates illustrate a source problem rather than settle it. MarketBeat displayed Q4 expectations of $629.83 million revenue and $4.35 EPS; FXEmpire displayed $636.13 million and $4.37. FactSet reported $634.7 million revenue and $4.52 adjusted EPS. Revenue therefore beat one displayed estimate and missed the other, while adjusted EPS exceeded both. These secondary consensus aggregates may differ by collection time, analyst set and accounting basis; they do not establish what the whole market priced.

The Positioning

The intraday price response is observable, but it does not identify who owns, hedges or is forced to trade the shares. Current short interest, borrow, options open interest, dealer exposure, institutional flows, fund flows and order-book depth were not verified. Price and volume alone do not establish crowded positioning or a squeeze mechanism. Positioning confidence is low and capped at 3/5.

The Catalyst

  1. FY27 quarterly evidence: compare organic ASV, reported revenue, renewals, client retention, AI product conversion, adjusted and GAAP margins, and free cash flow with the guide. The next exact reporting date was not verified.
  2. Nov. 10 investor day: management has scheduled a company investor day. The cheapest disconfirming test is a quantified bridge from AI-product adoption to paid ASV, revenue per client and gross margin, with the same definitions carried into subsequent reports.
  3. Cancel the long thesis: a material cut to organic ASV or revenue guidance, retention falling below the recent >95% level, or margin/cash deterioration without a time-bound explanation would weaken the proposed re-rating case. These are research tests, not order triggers.

The Payoff

The map below is a reference-level sensitivity, not a forecast or fair-value model. Top and bottom are observed market levels, while base holds at the post-report reference. The subjective probabilities are an explicit scenario allocation, not measured frequencies. The base is the highest-probability outcome because the Q4 evidence is positive but the gap between AI adoption, guided organic growth and future margin realization remains unresolved.

Scenario Probability Target / Level Return from $268.53 Horizon Conditions Evidence Quality
Top Case 15% $313.55 +16.8% Through Dec. 30, 2026 Revisit the Aug. 31 close as recurring AI/data adoption converts into growth and margin confidence Low as a future outcome; level is observed history
Base Case 60% $268.53 0.0% Through Dec. 30, 2026 Guide broadly holds; investors wait for paid AI conversion and margin follow-through Low; reference hold, not a forecast
Bottom Case 25% $248.00 -7.7% Through Dec. 30, 2026 Retest the observed Sep. 30 intraday low if growth, AI monetization or margins disappoint Low as a future outcome; observed low is not a floor
Invalidation n/a Evidence trigger, not price stop Not applicable Next reported quarter(s) Guide cut, retention deterioration, or cash/margin deterioration without conversion evidence Medium; observable but not yet resolved

Probability-weighted expected value: $270.15, or +0.6% gross versus the reference before costs: (0.15×313.55 + 0.60×268.53 + 0.25×248.00) / 268.53 - 1. Current market level and timestamp: $268.53, Sep. 30, 1:30 p.m. EDT; regular-session reference only. Primary instrument: FDS common stock, research only. 10/5 favorable base move: 0.0%; the +16.8% top case is not the highest-probability base. 10/5 credible adverse move: at least 7.7% to the observed post-report intraday low; not a maximum-loss estimate or cap. 10/5 measurement basis: Reference-only; entry.price is null. 10/5 status: Reject. Base reward/adverse ratio is 0:1, and the observed adverse stress already exceeds 5%. The wider tail is unbounded by this map. Confidence: Low.

The scenario weights do not rescue the setup: they produce only 0.6% gross expected upside before costs, while the highest-probability outcome is flat and the historical low stress exceeds the adverse threshold. A 10% base from the reference would require $295.38. Nothing in the issuer release alone proves that level is the most likely outcome over this window.

The Kill Shot

Strongest counterparty argument: FactSet has a long-lived subscription model, retention above 95%, longer renewals, and rapidly increasing AI-solution ASV additions. Those facts may precede paid product expansion; the FY27 guide still assumes revenue and organic ASV growth, not contraction.

Most fragile long assumption: that adoption metrics will convert into incremental, durable, high-margin client spending faster than the current guide implies. More trials or usage do not guarantee contracts, price realization, or margin expansion.

Why a directionally right thesis can still lose: FDS could grow recurring revenue and still fall if AI is bundled rather than monetized, renewal timing creates a growth pause, costs rise faster than revenue, or the market applies a lower multiple to slower growth. A lower quote after a positive print can persist; the observed Aug. 31 price is not a valuation floor.

What Would Prove This Wrong

  • FY27 organic ASV growth sustains or exceeds the FY26 7.0% rate, with disclosed AI product revenue/ASV conversion and stable or improving unit economics.
  • Retention remains above 95%, average renewal length holds, and revenue per client or paid adoption improves without higher discounting.
  • Adjusted and GAAP margins recover alongside operating cash flow, rather than depending on recurring add-backs or lower share count.
  • The share price establishes a fresh regular-session range after the release without the current evidence of execution risk worsening.

These observations would justify rebuilding the map, not retroactively turn today’s reference levels into an executable signal.

Risk Audit

  • Macro and factor: higher rates, risk aversion or a broad software/data de-rating can overwhelm company execution.
  • Business: customer budgets, consolidation, renewals, data licensing, cybersecurity and competition can weaken retention or pricing.
  • AI: adoption may expand usage but cannibalize legacy products, be bundled into existing contracts, or increase infrastructure and support costs.
  • Accounting: adjusted margin and EPS exclude defined items; GAAP operating income, margin, cash generation and share count remain relevant cross-checks.
  • Event and execution: the reference is intraday after earnings, not a verified executable quote. Gaps, halts, spread, depth, volume quality and exit liquidity remain unverified.
  • Positioning: no current direct evidence identifies crowding, forced flows or protection from other investors’ positioning.

Best Trade Strategy

No trade. Do not initiate a long from the reference-only map. Entry remains null; execution is blocked. Reassess only after reported FY27 organic ASV, client-level AI conversion, revenue and margin/cash data provide an issuer-specific path to a base case above +10% and a credible adverse case within -5%, with at least 2:1 gross reward to adverse risk. Common stock only for future research; no options, leverage, margin, market orders or price-floor language.

Research Quality Scorecard

Criterion Score Reason
Market disagreement 3 AI adoption/retention strength contrasts with slower FY27 organic ASV guidance and margin recovery still unproven
Evidence base 4 Fresh issuer result and explicit guide; no verified client-level AI monetization split or independent fair value
Positioning and flows 2 Market reaction is observable, but direct crowding, borrow, options and flow data are missing
Catalyst path 4 Next reported metrics and a dated Nov. 10 investor day provide observable follow-up tests
Payoff architecture 1 Flat base, -7.7% observed-level downside stress, 0:1 base/adverse ratio, and only +0.6% modeled gross EV
Invalidation discipline 4 Organic ASV, retention, revenue, margins, cash and paid AI conversion are measurable
Differentiated insight 4 Separates AI usage/adoption claims from paid ASV, revenue and margin realization
Client value 5 Distinguishes a strong result from an evidenced long edge and keeps execution fail-closed
Total 27/40 Reject / no-trade screen; failed 10/5 economics override the score

Bottom Line

FactSet has a valuable subscription franchise and the latest report strengthened the case that its AI products are gaining traction. It did not establish that adoption will produce enough incremental revenue and margin to support a >10% base return with a downside no worse than 5%. On the $268.53 intraday reference, the base is flat, the adverse stress is larger than 5%, and expected gross return is under 1% before costs. Reject; no long signal.
