MillerKnoll's tariff-adjusted earnings are weaker, but the short still fails 10/5

MillerKnoll's tariff-adjusted earnings are weaker, but the short still fails 10/5

Summary: MillerKnoll's fiscal Q1 adjusted EPS rose 18%, but $0.11 per share came from a one-time tariff refund; excluding it, adjusted EPS was about $0.42, below the prior-year $0.45. The sales guide was trimmed while EPS guidance held, and the stock's roughly 10.1x midpoint FY2027 adjusted-EPS multiple does not give a short enough payoff against a credible squeeze. Reject; no trade.

Run: U.S. market, short-only research. Research time: September 23, 2026, 07:27 Asia/Singapore. The MLKN quote below is an extended-hours observation, reference-only.

Selected opportunity: MillerKnoll, as the strongest fresh short research case, not an executable opportunity.

Why this one now: Its newly reported tariff refund makes the difference between reported operating improvement and underlying demand measurable. The same report also shows why the short can fail: adjusted EPS guidance was maintained, operating cash flow improved, and two of three major segment order books grew.

What should surprise the reader: Removing the $0.11 tariff-refund benefit turns the reported $0.53 adjusted EPS into approximately $0.42. Yet even at the $20.29 extended-hours reference, the stock is only about 10.1 times the midpoint of the company's $1.85-$2.15 FY2027 adjusted EPS outlook. That combination supports scrutiny, not a proven 10/5 short.

Why This Is the Best Opportunity Right Now

This is the most decision-useful new short case among the three earnings candidates because its result includes both a quantified temporary earnings benefit and a revised sales range. It is not the best executable trade. AZO's new release mostly confirms earnings growth and its post-result price rose; KBH's release is a post-close event whose first regular-session reaction has not occurred.

MLKN reported Q1 FY2027 net sales of $923.4 million, down 3.4% year over year. Adjusted operating margin improved to 7.1% from 6.3%, but management says the $10 million net tariff refund added 110 basis points of operating margin and $0.11 to diluted EPS. Excluding that benefit, adjusted operating margin would be about 6.0% and adjusted EPS about $0.42. These are arithmetic adjustments to company-reported figures, not company guidance.

The sales outlook midpoint fell from $4.03 billion to $3.955 billion, a $75 million or 1.9% reduction. The $1.85-$2.15 adjusted EPS range was unchanged. Q1 North America Contract orders declined 1.7%, but International Contract orders rose 17.3% and Global Retail orders rose 4.3%. The weakness is real, but it is not uniform.

Why This Can Move More Than 5% Soon

A further deterioration in North America Contract sales, failure of the sequential Q2 revenue outlook, or margin pressure when tariff refunds roll off could lower expected earnings and compress the multiple. The next check is the Q2 FY2027 report, whose date is not yet announced. Company guidance calls for $972 million-$1.012 billion of Q2 revenue and $0.43-$0.49 adjusted EPS.

The counter-path is equally concrete: International Contract orders grew 17.3%, Global Retail orders grew 4.3%, the Q1 adjusted EPS beat management described as above expectations, and full-year adjusted EPS guidance was maintained. Q1 operating cash flow increased to $49.1 million from $9.4 million. A short entered before those supports are tested can lose on a modest multiple recovery even if sales remain weak.

10/5 Asymmetry Gate

The reference-only cases below translate the company's midpoint FY2027 adjusted EPS guidance of $2.00 into 7.5x, 9.0x and 11.0x earnings. These are valuation sensitivities, not observed market-implied probabilities or price targets from consensus. The probabilities are subjective scenario weights: 25% for continued deterioration, 50% for weak demand with the stated EPS range broadly achieved, and 25% for operating stabilization and a higher multiple. They are not historical frequencies.

At the $20.29 extended-hours reference, the implied multiple is 10.15x the $2.00 midpoint. The base case is below 10% only if rounded; using unrounded values, $18.00 implies an 11.3% decline. The $22.00 bottom case implies an 8.4% adverse rise, so the gross base reward-to-adverse-risk ratio is only 1.34:1 before borrow, dividends, spread or slippage. The setup fails both the adverse-risk and 2:1 tests; null entry also means the 10/5 bound is not executable evidence.

What Should Surprise the Reader

The headline adjusted EPS rose 17.8%, but the tariff refund was worth 20.8% of the $0.53 reported adjusted EPS. After removing it, the simple comparison is about $0.42 versus $0.45 a year earlier, a 6.7% decline. At the same time, the adjusted margin bridge still includes pricing realization and cost savings, and Q1 cash flow improved. Removing the temporary benefit does not prove that all earnings growth was artificial.

The Setup

The setup is a post-result short screen, not a pending order. The observable disagreement is weaker reported demand and a small revenue-guidance reduction against an EPS outlook that did not change. The market reference price is low relative to the company's own adjusted EPS range, and current short interest is too stale to establish crowding or forced buying.

The Market Price

The latest available quote snapshot was $20.29 at 21:35 UTC on September 22 (17:35 EDT), after the regular session. Treat it as reference-only. I do not have a separately verified September 22 regular-session closing print, bid/ask, spread, depth or venue-quality snapshot. The stated $1.85-$2.15 full-year adjusted EPS range implies 9.4x-11.0x at that reference price; midpoint is 10.15x. The annual range is a company non-GAAP measure and is not interchangeable with GAAP EPS or free cash flow.

The Mispricing

The short thesis is that investors may capitalize a tariff-boosted margin while demand and contract orders weaken. The strongest counterargument is that the sales guidance cut was modest, adjusted EPS guidance held, and adjusted operating earnings improved even before considering the full mix of price and cost actions. At about 10.1x midpoint adjusted EPS, the quote does not require a recovery multiple to look inexpensive on the company's own outlook.

The price's implied forward multiple is observable arithmetic; what investors expect for future margins is not. I do not have sufficient reliable consensus data to quantify the market's embedded sales or margin assumptions accurately.

The Positioning

MarketBeat reports 3,995,357 shares short, equal to 6.15% of float, at the August 31 settlement date, up 3.29% from the prior report; it reports 7.6 days to cover using its average-volume series. The data is more than three weeks old at publication and vendor DTC estimates differ. It does not establish current short ownership, borrow availability, fee, utilization, recall terms or forced-covering risk. Positioning evidence is therefore partial, not proof of a crowded short.

The Catalyst

  1. Observed: Q1 FY2027 reported Sep. 22; results show falling sales and a material tariff-refund contribution, with unchanged EPS guidance.
  2. Next test: Q2 revenue of $972 million-$1.012 billion, adjusted EPS of $0.43-$0.49, margin and order conversion; report date not yet announced.
  3. Later test: whether contract orders convert to sales while tariff refunds roll off and management can fund planned $125-$135 million FY2027 capex.

The cheapest falsification test is the next order and revenue update: if North America Contract orders stabilize and the Q2 guide is met without additional temporary benefits, the deterioration thesis weakens before a full-year miss is needed.

The Payoff

The valuation sensitivities assume the $2.00 midpoint FY2027 adjusted EPS guide and vary the multiple. The 7.5x top case requires both continuing weak demand and a lower valuation; the 9.0x base case requires some multiple compression despite the maintained EPS range; the 11.0x bottom case allows the company to deliver the outlook and recover part of its valuation. None is a validated fair value.

Price Target and Probability Map

Scenario Probability Target / Level Return / Payoff Horizon Conditions Evidence Quality
Top Case 25% $15.00 (7.5x $2.00) +26.1% short underlying decline Through next two quarterly reports, about six months; timing estimate, not scheduled Contract demand weakens further and the reduced sales outlook is cut again Low
Base Case 50% $18.00 (9.0x $2.00) +11.3% short underlying decline Same Weak demand persists, but the current EPS range is broadly achieved Low
Bottom Case 25% $22.00 (11.0x $2.00) -8.4% short underlying loss Same EPS guidance holds, orders convert, and the market grants a modestly higher multiple Medium
Invalidation n/a Q2 revenue and adjusted EPS meet or exceed guidance while order trends stabilize Retire the operating-deterioration thesis; do not add to a short Next earnings report; date unannounced Verify segment orders, tariff-adjusted margin and cash conversion Medium

Probability-weighted expected value: $18.25 per share, or approximately +10.1% for an unlevered short versus the $20.29 extended-hours reference, before dividends, borrow, funding, fees, spread, slippage and path effects. This is an analyst scenario estimate, not an observed frequency.

Current market level and timestamp: $20.29, September 22, 2026, 21:35 UTC (17:35 EDT), extended-hours quote snapshot; reference-only.

Primary instrument: Common stock, if a future short is ever reconsidered.

10/5 favorable base move: 11.3% from reference-only $20.29.

10/5 credible adverse move: 8.4% to $22.00, before gap and execution costs.

10/5 measurement basis: Reference-only; no verified entry.

10/5 status: Reject. The adverse case exceeds 5%, and gross base reward/adverse risk is 1.34:1, below 2:1.

Confidence: Low. The operating facts are fresh, but valuation cases and probabilities are subjective, and current execution/positioning evidence is missing.

The Kill Shot

The mature counterparty case is that management reduced the full-year sales range only modestly while maintaining adjusted EPS guidance, and its cost controls, retail growth and international orders can carry profit through a weak North American office market. Q1 operating cash flow improved sharply. A 10.1x adjusted forward multiple leaves room for the market to accept low growth without a further 10% decline.

The most fragile short assumption is that Q1 tariff support fades faster than pricing, savings and stronger non-North-American demand can replace it. Another risk is that the stock's low multiple limits downside while shorts pay a quarterly dividend of $0.1875 per share and face an unverified borrow regime.

What Could Go Wrong

  • International Contract orders convert into revenue after their 17.3% Q1 increase.
  • Global Retail orders and margins continue improving; Q1 orders increased 4.3% and adjusted margin rose to 7.0%.
  • Q2 revenue and adjusted EPS land inside the company's guidance, leaving the FY EPS range intact.
  • Tariff refunds, cost savings, pricing or product mix offset softer demand more than this short case assumes.
  • A broad-market or sector re-rating lifts the shares above the modeled $22.00 bottom case.
  • Short borrow cost, recall, dividend expense or a gap up erases a correct but slow fundamental thesis.

What Would Prove This Wrong

The operating thesis weakens if Q2 revenue and adjusted EPS meet guidance, North America Contract orders stabilize, and cash generation remains positive after capex. It is invalidated if management restores the sales outlook or reports durable demand recovery across its contract segments. Execution remains blocked unless a fresh regular-session quote, broker locate, borrow fee and recall terms, spread, depth, venue and exit liquidity are all verified.

Risk Audit

Risk Assessment
Information Fresh Sep. 22 release; Q2 reporting date not announced
Price $20.29 is an after-hours reference, not an entry
Positioning Aug. 31 short-interest data is stale; no live borrow or recall evidence
Financing $580.4M liquidity includes revolver availability; credit-facility net debt/EBITDA was 2.75x
Earnings quality $0.11 EPS refund is temporary, but cash flow, orders and guidance provide offsets
Gap and liquidity Shares can gap above the modeled adverse case; top-of-book and exit depth are unknown
Carry Dividend and any borrow/funding charges reduce a short's net return

Best Trade Strategy

No trade. Keep entry.price null and execution false. Reassess only after the next report date is confirmed and the company reports Q2 revenue, orders, margin and cash conversion. A new screen would still need an updated valuation bridge, locate, borrow/recall terms, regular-session quote and exit-liquidity evidence. No options, leverage, margin, market orders or no-locate short.

Bottom Line

The earnings release supplies a real short-side fact: without the $0.11 tariff-refund benefit, adjusted EPS fell year over year and contract demand was uneven. The same release preserved full-year adjusted EPS guidance, and the market reference already values the stock at about 10 times that midpoint. A subjective six-month map produces an 11.3% base decline but an 8.4% adverse rise and only 1.34:1 gross reward/risk. That is a useful monitor, not a short. Reject; no executable entry.
